'MITRE 10 SUSTAINABLE LIVING GARDEN'

There were two main objectives for the MIFGS 2007; to showcase trends shaping gardens and outdoor living areas of the future and to demonstrate eco-friendly sustainable solutions.  AQL took up this challenge and created three garden rooms designed around the theme ‘living in harmony with nature.’

Children’s Jungle Garden

This garden room encourages children to use their imaginations and take an interest in local wildlife. Winding paths and natural soft fall material draw children to the heart of the garden, where a contemporary cubby provides an elevated lookout and a bridge to a sunken play area.  Brightly coloured bird houses, feeders and perches provide an element of fun whilst attracting birds.

Relaxed Urban Garden

Inspired by high density living, this garden aims to cerate a relaxed outdoor sanctuary while making the most of valuable space.  Recyclable aluminium walkways and decking float above the foliage allowing 100% of the ground plane to be planted.  The architecture of the aluminium is repeated in the planting scheme with hedges and block planting at different heights.

Formal Entertaining Garden

This garden demonstrates the potential to adopt a range of sustainable practices without sacrificing style, functionality or formal looks.  The garden includes a tank to supply the fish pond stocked with native fish and to irrigate the garden.  A storage box and worm farm for recycling kitchen scraps is hidden inside a day bed while on the lower deck a BBQ is concealed in a similar way.
